A Relaxed Wedding Day in Leicestershire

Wedding photography is one of the areas where I think the way you work matters just as much as the photographs themselves.

Nobody wants to spend half their wedding day being moved around for photos.

For this wedding, the focus was on keeping things relaxed and capturing what was already happening.

The brief

The couple wanted their day documented naturally.

Of course there were a few photographs that needed a little direction, but most of the day was about watching what was happening and being ready when the moments appeared.

The laughs during the morning, reactions during the ceremony, conversations between guests, speeches and everything that happens when people forget the camera is there.

Those are normally the photographs people end up coming back to.

The day

I try to keep my approach simple at weddings.

Be present when something important is happening, give direction when it is actually useful and stay out of the way the rest of the time.

That means I can still get the portraits and group photographs people expect, without making the whole day revolve around photography.

Some of my favourite images usually come from the few seconds either side of the photograph everyone knew was happening.

Someone starts laughing, somebody looks across the room or something completely unplanned happens.

You cannot really manufacture those moments.

You just need to notice them.

The result

The finished gallery told the story of the whole day rather than just showing the biggest parts of it.

There were portraits and the traditional photographs, but there were also the reactions, details and smaller moments that made the wedding personal to the couple.

That is always what I want a wedding gallery to feel like.

Something that takes you back to the day rather than simply reminding you what everybody looked like.
